What is #chatGPT?

Date tag and connected world image.

I’ve been personally exploring and researching the phenomenon of chatGPT from Open.AI for the last few weeks. This and other AIs will have profound implications to the way some businesses and sectors function. Indeed, many commentators are saying this is the start of a new reality and jokingly mention the day the world changed as ‘30th Nov 2022’ (in reference to Skynet and the Terminator films).

ChatGPT signed up 1m users in 5 days which beats a whole host of other services such as netflix, instagram, and angry birds etc. It continues to sign users up at a tremendous rate with its servers struggling to keep up at times.

However, as I go out and about talking with businesses it’s clear that not everyone has heard of it or understands the basics of what is it and what it can do. To help out I asked chatGPT to explain itself to a lay person. Here’s its answer:

“GPT-3 (Generative Pre-trained Transformer 3) is a state-of-the-art machine learning model developed by OpenAI. It can understand and generate text in a wide variety of styles and formats, from formal academic language to casual conversation.

It works by analyzing a large amount of text data (commonly called "training data") and using that information to generate new text that is similar in style and content.

Think of it as an advanced form of autocomplete, but it can generate complete answers and even coherent paragraphs or articles on various topics.

For example, if you ask GPT-3 to write a summary of a news article, it will read the article, understand the main idea, and write a summary. Similarly, if you ask GPT-3 to write an essay on a certain topic, it will generate an essay that is coherent, well-written and based on the information it was trained on.

You can use GPT-3 to help with tasks such as writing, content creation, research, and even coding. Because GPT-3 is highly versatile, it can be used in a wide range of applications, from creating chatbot responses to generating creative fiction, and more.

It's worth noting that GPT-3 is not perfect and it can have mistakes or misinterpretations and also it is not a replacement for human creativity but it is a great tool to assist and enhance the human's work.”

You’ll see a lot more about this new AI tool in the coming months. It’s much more powerful than simply producing articles, which is the one area a lot of people seem to focus in on.

It has various pro’s and con’s which I won’t go into in this article, but suffice to say, if you’ve not explored it yet I recommend you put a pot of coffee on and spend some time getting to grips with the basics. https://openai.com/api/
