Birmingham Business Boost

We are delighted to have been commissioned by the BSEEN project to support start-up entrepreneurs in the Birmingham City Region.

After a competitive tender process Know+Do was chosen to deliver the start of each BSEEN Boot Camp, outlining and inspiring new business owners to make an effective plan.

Bernard Clarke began the work on 9th September with 50 eager founders and we will be providing the training to six more cohorts over the life of the current business start-up programme. Using our own template and lots of examples he inspired the cohort to explore their plans and test their ideas. They now move onto further specialist training in finance, marketing, sales and mindset.

BSEEN is a European funded initiative, offerring an intensive 5-day Boot Camp and year long mentor support programme to eligible new businesses; they can also provide free office space and start-up grants. To find out more about BSEEN visit their website.

At Know+Do we understand that your business is more than just a place of work it is somewhere your talents, ambitions and passions can thrive.

As a way of supporting the Manchester business community we have teamed up with a local co-working provider, Work.Life, to create the Tuesday Take Away Talks starting on 9th July 2019.

Every second Tuesday in the month we will hold a ‘Tuesday Take Away Talk’ from 5 to 7pm in Work.Life's excellent new co-working space in the centre of Manchester. The evening includes a short inspirational talk from Know and Do on leading and managing a business and then will be open to questions and discussion from attendees.

All session are held in the ground floor lounge area of Work.Life Manchester, they are presented in an informal, relaxed and engaging style to give real value to attendees. There is no charge for attending and refreshments will be provided but as places are limited booking in advance is required. The evenings are a great way to meet other business leaders after work.

The first talk topic will be:

9th July - What is your business achieving and why?
Successful businesses can clearly articulate a purpose to their work and values that they subscribe too; this creates the space for great leadership to inspire others to work with you. In this session, we’ll share examples of clear purpose and values enabling companies to achieve success. We’ll give you a way to measure your business, your approach and how you inspire the people around you to work with you.

Future talk topics are:

  • 13th August - The great, the tough and the messy of leading a team! Top tips on how to lead a team and get high performance from your colleagues.

  • 10th September - Turnover is vanity, profit is sanity. Growth is not always a good thing unless it is carefully managed, so to help we will share ways to plan for a profitable business.

  • 8th October - Who wants to buy your products and services? No business can sell to 'everyone', by taking the time to learn ways to segment and study your customers you can be smarter with your marketing.

  • 12th November - 10 smart ways to market your business. Tonight we will map out practical ways a business leader can coordinate and measure their marketing efforts,

  • 10th December - Why are we terrified of closing the deal? Sales can be a frightening phrase to many people in business. Our experienced team will explain techniques we can all use to build our confidence in selling.

Delegation for Directors, 17th July

When you are leading a company, whatever its size, learning how to delegate well improves the performance of the business. Whether you are sharing tasks with colleagues, establishing a new process or outsourcing a role, clear communication of what you need done is vital. Delegation is an art and as a great leader you will want your people to reach their potential; this seminar will inspire you to continue that path.

To share techniques and ideas on delegation for directors Bernard Clarke, Know+Do will be leading a free insight workshop for the Institute of Directors on 17th July 2019 in central Manchester from 8.30-10am.

‘Delegation for Directors’ will provide practical techniques to review your delegation skills and set clear instructions for others including topics such as: great questions, clarity of expectations, effective communication and how to utilise motivation.

The seminar will be interactive and engaging, with attendees asked to share their knowledge and expertise. Using examples of great practice the session will give you templates to re-use and share in your business.

NHS Mentoring cohorts 3 + 4

Know+Do have just completed another 2 days mentor training for cohorts 3 + 4. This exciting new programme has been developed for Health Education England and is aimed at supporting senior NHS professionals to mentor colleagues who are returning to work. After an initial day’s training on mentoring skills the cohorts then undergo Action Learning training and form an action learning set to continue to support each other.

Formal mentoring programmes are known to make a highly positive impact on organisations, those being mentored and the mentors themselves. Know+Do are passionate about mentoring and the difference it makes. Many people we train have experienced more informal mentoring which whilst useful has a tendency to fizzle out. Plus, individuals talked about not being sure what to share with a mentor and being confused as to whether a manager can and should be your mentor. This new programme helps to offer a clear defined programme of mentoring support across the North West.

The NHS is under increasing pressure and the men and women staffing the service do incredible work. We are very pleased to be helping them to support their colleagues through this programme. Launch of the 5th Inspiring Business Leaders course

On the 8th February Know+Do started its fifth Inspiring Business Leaders programme in collaboration with Tech Manchester at UKFast’s Manchester campus. Aimed at providing local SME’s with an opportunity to review and reflect on key areas of their business. Previous participants have told us that its useful to be reminded of the things you know you should review but you can easily ignore because you’re too busy.

The programme is being run over 4 half-day sessions and spaces are available for the remaining seminars:

Session 1 covered the Mission, vision and values of the business.

Session 2 Is a review of Leadership and Management in the business. (22nd February)

Session 3 Is concerned with growing the business and understanding the numbers. (8th March)

Session 4 Will focus on successful Marketing and Sales. (22nd March)

The sessions are all delivered in a PowerPoint free environment and encourage an opportunity for business owners and leaders to explore, reflect, and share ideas and experiences whilst also thinking through new opportunities for their businesses.

We had a great selection of businesses from new start-ups to established businesses employing up to 50+ people. Whatever the stage a business is at there are problems and opportunities. Many times when we’re caught in the day to day running of the business it’s easy not to build enough proper reflective time into exploring these problems and opportunities normally until the problem demands our attention or we’ve missed the opportunity.

Know+Do offer the programme free of charge to qualifying local businesses as a way of giving back to support SMEs to grow. This also expresses one of our core business values of Sharing Knowledge. It can be difficult for many businesses just starting out and we believe that a little bit of planned time out to reflect and review can help to make better decisions and more profitable businesses and that’s good for all of us.

Mentoring Podcast

We were delighted to be asked to join the UK Fast team on a podcast to promote mentoring yesterday.

Andrew Ramwell trains the business mentors on the Tech Manchester scale up programme, which support news businesses in Greater Manchester by matching them to experienced pro-bono mentors. He is also contracted by the NHS to train senior clinicians in how to mentor staff returning to work after long periods of absence.

Joining a panel of Arlene Bulfin (UK Fast), Patricia Keating (Tech Manchester), Claire-Marie Boggiano (Lurig) and Lisa Murgatroyd (One Million Mentors) Andrew discussed how to inspire more mentors, train great mentors and maximise the help for the mentees.

“I am passionate about raising awareness of mentoring,” shared Andrew. “Early on in my career I benefited from a great mentor and now I pay that gift forward in mentoring with others.” He went on to highlight how the workplace environment is changing rapidly and the value in having someone you trust to explore your challenges and hold you to account can help people succeed.

Over the hour the panel shared in-depth their experience of being mentors and making mentors. Afterwards Andrew joined a new round of mentors to lead the afternoon training session.

Business Seminar Series - Bookings Open

Inspiring Business Leaders is back for 2019, with a new format to support business leaders in Greater Manchester.
